Sora Pricing: Sora Is Discontinued, Here Is What It Cost and What Replaces It
The Sora app and web closed on 26 April 2026 and the API on 24 September 2026. The last published rates were $0.10 a second for Sora 2 and up to $0.70 for Sora 2 Pro; here is what comparable clips cost now.
Sora has no price any more, because you cannot buy it. OpenAI announced on 24 March 2026 that Sora would be discontinued, the Sora app and web experience went dark on 26 April 2026, and the Sora 2 API shut down on 24 September 2026. sora.com now shows one line: "Sora is no longer available. You can export your data at any time." The last published prices were the API rates on OpenAI's model pages: $0.10 a second for Sora 2 at 720p, and $0.30 to $0.70 a second for Sora 2 Pro depending on resolution. Comparable clips today cost a few cents to under a dollar a second on other platforms, shown in the charts below.
What happened to each way of buying Sora
| Access route | Status | Date | What is left |
|---|---|---|---|
| Announcement | Discontinuation announced to users and developers | 24 March 2026 | n/a |
| Sora app (iOS, Android) | Closed | 26 April 2026 | Nothing to subscribe to |
| sora.com (web) | Closed | 26 April 2026 | A data export button |
| Videos API (sora-2, sora-2-pro and their dated snapshots) | Shut down | 24 September 2026 | No replacement named by OpenAI |
Status checked on 31 October 2026 on sora.com and on OpenAI's API deprecations page and Sora 2 model pages. The deprecations page lists "---" in the replacement column for every Sora model, and there is no Sora 3.
What Sora used to cost
OpenAI's API model pages still show the per-second rates, now marked "Shut down". These were API prices, billed per second of video:
| Model | Resolution | Per second | 8-second clip | One minute |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sora 2 | 720p (1280x720 or 720x1280) | $0.10 | $0.80 | $6.00 |
| Sora 2 Pro | 720p | $0.30 | $2.40 | $18.00 |
| Sora 2 Pro | 1792x1024 or 1024x1792 | $0.50 | $4.00 | $30.00 |
| Sora 2 Pro | 1080p (1920x1080 or 1080x1920) | $0.70 | $5.60 | $42.00 |
The clip and minute columns multiply the per-second rate. This page does not list the old consumer plans for the Sora app, because OpenAI no longer publishes them and we have no sourced record of their prices or limits. One figure about the economics behind the shutdown, reported at the time and cited in our migration guide: compute costs of roughly $1 million a day against subscription revenue estimated at under $2 million a month.
Is Sora free now?
No, and it is not paid either: there is no way to generate with Sora today. The only thing sora.com still offers is a data export of what you made before the shutdown. Some third-party sites still list Sora 2 on their price pages, but they were reselling OpenAI's API, which stopped on 24 September 2026, so a listing is not a sign the model still runs. If you want something free to try, Google Flow gives every account 50 credits a day for Veo 3.1 and Gemini Omni Flash, enough for two to four short clips.
What the replacements cost today
Seedance 2.5 is the reference model on all our pricing pages. This is the cheapest published price for a 5-second 720p Seedance 2.5 clip on each platform we track, which compares with $0.50 for 5 seconds of Sora 2 at 720p on the old API rate:
Google's Veo 3.1 is the other common replacement, with native audio like Sora 2. Here is an 8-second 720p Veo 3.1 clip on each platform we track, against $0.80 for the same length on Sora 2:
The charts read each platform's own price page twice a day, so they move when prices move. Per-second figures for every length and resolution are on the Seedance 2.5 radar, the Veo 3.1 radar and the full price radar.
Which to pick instead
Our benchmark scored Sora 2 at 4.76 out of 5 before the shutdown, 8th of the 16 models we have tested. Using the same 40-prompt battery:
- Closest quality overall: Gemini Omni, 4.82 (4th of 16), with native audio. It is on the Google AI plans through Flow, from $4.99 a month, and on pay-per-use APIs.
- Seedance 2.5: 4.79 (6th of 16), within 0.03 of Sora 2. Sold through credit subscriptions such as Higgsfield (from its Plus plan), Magnific and Runway, and per second through APIs such as fal.ai and Replicate. See Higgsfield pricing and Magnific pricing.
- Veo 3.1: 4.63 (12th of 16). Cheap inside Google's plans, where an 8-second Veo 3.1 Fast clip is 20 Flow credits, or 10 on Ultra.
- Editing as well as generation: Runway, covered in Runway pricing.
- Pipelines that called the Sora API: follow the checklist in the Sora API migration guide; prompts tuned for Sora need re-testing on any new model.
